The Science of Scent: Why Do Some Melts Smell Stronger Than Others?
Ever wondered why one wax melt can fill your whole house with fragrance, while another barely makes it past the hallway? It feels like magic, but it’s actually a bit of a science!
At Star Scents, I’ve spent a lot of time geeking out over wax blends and fragrance loads to make sure your home smells incredible. Here is the lowdown on what goes into that perfect scent "throw."
The "Throw": Hot vs. Cold
In the wax world, we talk about two types of "throw." Cold Throw is what you smell when you first open the pack - it’s that "Ooh, that’s nice!" moment. Hot Throw is the real test! It’s the scent released when the wax is melting. A great melt needs a balance of both. If the wax is too hard, the scent can’t escape; if it’s too soft, it might smell great in the bag but disappear the moment you light the tea light.
The Wax Blend: My Secret Sauce
You might have noticed I use different waxes depending on the product. Every wax has a different "job" to do, and choosing the right one is what makes a great melt.
Soy Wax is my natural favourite. I only use this in my wax melts. It is 100% plant-based and loved for its slow, clean burn. It’s fantastic at holding onto delicate fragrances and releasing them steadily. (It’s also why you’ll sometimes see that natural "frosting" on my stars!)
Rapeseed Wax is another eco-friendly hero. It’s sustainable, often grown right here in the UK and Europe, and it burns beautifully.
Paraffin Wax is the absolute powerhouse of scent throw. Paraffin is incredible at "throwing" fragrance across a large room, especially in candles, giving you that instant hit of scent the moment it starts to melt. By choosing the right wax - or the perfect blend - it makes sure you get a clean burn without sacrificing that "wow" factor.
Fragrance Loading
It sounds simple: just add more oil, right? Actually, if you add too much oil, the wax can’t hold it, and it "bleeds" out (you might see little beads of oil on top). If you add too little, you won't smell a thing. It’s all about finding the perfect percentage where the wax and oil are perfectly bonded.
Your Burner Matters!
Believe it or not, the equipment you use makes a difference. If your burner is too tall, the wax doesn't get hot enough to release the scent. If it’s too short, it gets too hot and "flashes off" the scent too quickly. (Check out my previous post on Safety Tips to see why the 4-hour tea light is the secret weapon here!)
The Star Scents Promise
I test every single batch I make in my own home first. If it doesn't pass the "can I smell this from the top of the stairs?" test, it doesn't get sent out to you!
